The One Nature project created the first comprehensive document introducing the topic of nature values and ecosystem services that is based on examples from Czech landscape. The film is publicly available to everyone interested and further usable e.g. for teaching and education.

The film was created by CzechGlobe, CUEC, Ministry of the Environment, Nature Conservation Agency and Biology Centre CAS, under the directorial of Michal Gálik. On behalf of CUEC, you will meet our researcher Kateřina Mácová.

One of the ten successful projects of the prestigious GACR EXPRO competition is the project "Pathways to Environmental Sustainability" by Jan Weinzettel, head of the Environmental Footprint Laboratory at our Centre. EXPRO projects aim to promote scientific excellence through superior conditions and are intended for experienced scientists with a groundbreaking idea. The evaluation process is carried out exclusively by international scientists.

Employees of Charles University Environment Centre participated in the preparation of materials for the newly opened exhibition „The Earth Is Me“ at The National Museum, which focuses on sustainability and environmental protection from the perspective of the individual. The subtitle of the exhibition is: "It depends on me what the Earth will be like."

The exhibition is divided into seven thematic islands and researchers from the CUEC contributed to the creation of several of them. Dana Kapitulčinová, Ph.D., among others, was involved in the preparation of the island "Food at Home!" and the exhibition contains also a quiz with dishes from our Nutritional Footprint Calculator, which was created as an output of an applied research project from the TACR Omega program.

Book Applied ecology by Jan Frouz and Jaroslava Frouzova, published in Czech by Karolinum Press, Charles University, has been published in English by Springer. The book offers a comprehensive introduction to basic ecological and biological principles underlying modern agriculture, forestry, fisheries and aquaculture, explains how these principles are used to increase the production of food and other raw materials (wood, biofuels, fibre, and other materials), and provides new updated information to discuss how the intensification of the production of these goods changes the structure of ecosystems concerning energy and nutrient flows, and how these changes affect the functioning of ecosystems and the subsequent provisions of other non-productive ecosystem services. Additionally, the authors describe the methods by which contemporary science and society strives to increase the sustainability of agriculture, forestry and fisheries to maintain not only the production of food and other goods, but also other ecosystem services. 
Although not a textbook on agriculture, forestry and fisheries, the book familiarizes readers with the principles of their technologies, because the impact on ecosystems is largely based on the technological processes used. The book is primarily focused on temperate ecosystems, but it contains a number of examples about marine and tropical ecosystems impacted by globalization and our consumer behavior. The book will be of interest to students and researchers with backgrounds in ecology and environmental science, as well as non-experts interested in ecology and environmental protection.

On 23rd June 2021, the Environment Centre at Charles University in cooperation with the Czech University of Life Sciences (CULS) organised a Multiplier event workshop of the TEFSI project „Innovative teaching for sustainable food systems: How to prepare a university course with modern educational methods?“.

The workshop was held at the Faculty of Agrobiology, Food and Natural Resources at CULS and was aimed at lecturers interested in food systems and new teaching approaches. Main outcomes of the TEFSI project were presented at the workshop and participants had a chance to try out some of the teaching methods in practice. We also focused at sharing of experience with innovative teaching among the participants via moderated discussion as well as informally during coffee breaks and lunch.

The Spring School event on “Environmental Economics and Consumer Choices” was organized in Novém Šaldorfě as part of the project H2020 GEMCLIME and PRIMUS REGEC. The event, which took place on May 29-31, 2020, was attended by twenty students, junior and senior research fellows, who came to present and discuss their research.

The Environment Centre at Charles University in Prague was pleased to host a 3-day international workshop showcasing a range of innovative teaching methods with the aim to enrich the portfolio of course activities in the area of sustainable food systems. The workshop was held on 19th - 21st February 2020 under the guidance of lecturers from several European universities from Denmark, Germany, France and Italy as part of the project TEFSI funded by the Erasmus+ Programme.
